How to avoid feeling triggered by mean stuff your child says
Did you hear the message?! Or are you being triggered by the words?!
Turns out the words don't mean a whole heap. The words are what little they have in the tank to express their huge, overwhelming emotions.
It's not personal.
And they're not going to turn into bad people if you don't 'pull them up' for saying horrible things.
Yes - even if they're calling you stupid.
Don't engage in an argument or add any shame - just listen for the message. What are they REALLY trying to communicate here?!
More often than not it's a cry for help, a cry for connection.
Remember - behaviour is always communication.
