Why Some Kids Sleep Really Hot and What Can Help
My now 6 year old has always been a very sweaty sleeper. He always seems boiling whenever I check on him before bed and he needs his room to be pretty cold to even get to sleep.
It sounds like many of you are in the same boat.
Some kids just run hot, it can run in families. I know that my younger brother was just the same. There's a whole load of reasons it can happen - sometimes it's just because their nervous systems are still developing and they're not that good at regulating their temperature yet. Some kids fall into really deep sleeps which makes staying at an even temperature harder. Some kids have super fast metabolisms and that makes them generate more heat when they're lying still.
The one cause that I always keep a keen eye on and speak about (as a speech and language therapist) is that sweaty sleeping in some cases can be caused by airway obstruction. If a child is mouth breathing or snoring, they're working harder to breathe and their bodies can heat up more because of that. It doesn't automatically mean something serious but it's a good thing to keep an eye on as it can mean kids aren't getting enough high-quality sleep. That of course all adds up and can cause issues in the day like behavioural stuff and symptoms that look like ADHD. Even without sweating, mouth breathing or snoring at night is never 'normal' so worth looking into.
It's always worth chatting with your GP if you're concerned about your little one's sweaty sleeping. Until then, here are all the amazing suggestions my community made for helping to keep kids cool whilst they sleep. Enjoy!!
- Chillo pillow (my suggestion - my brother had one growing up and it was great)
- Fill a hot water bottle with water and put it in the fridge
- Look for a duvet inner that's light weight and 100% cotton
- Put a desk fan on the bedside table
- Cooling weighted blanket from bed bath and beyond
- Cooling pillow case
- Lora and Flock pillows
- Cooling quilt blanket from Space General
- Silk pillowcase
- Kmart pet cooling mat under the sheet (recommended lots of times)
- Take ice gel packs to bed (like a reverse water bottle)
- Cooling quilt / pillow from Ecosa
- Pop a wheat bag in the fridge or freezer
- Blast the air-con before bed
- Cooling pillows from Ikea
- Use a wool blanket under the fitted sheet
