Supporting a Frustrated Toddler

Supporting a Frustrated Toddler

Practice makes perfect for both kids AND adults. The ability to regulate emotions like an adult doesn’t happen until you’re an adult! And, think about it, even now it’s bloody hard!!

Every time you feel angry, ‘lose it’, shout or say something you don’t mean - that’s an example of you being disregulated, those feelings are hard to manage. So we can’t expect our impulsive little toddlers with underdeveloped brains to do it as well or better than us.

Getting dysregulated is normal and natural - it’s all about how to learn to get back to feeling yourself. If we model this for our toddlers by using calming/coping strategies in front of them then we teach them what they too can do to feel better. Practice and consistency is key.
