Misbehaving Children with Sensory Needs

More info ⬇️⬇️

I've for sure been guilty of forgetting that my kids can't communicate their sensory needs as we can.

Many kids can't even identify that they're frustrated because they're too hot - let alone take their own jumper off. Imagine being BOILING HOT and not being able to do anything about it?!

Whenever my kids are misbehaving I do my best to be a detective and work out first whether all their needs are met.
Are they:
• Too hot
• Too cold
• Wet
• Uncomfortable
• Itchy
• Hungry
• Thirsty
• Tired
• Overwhelmed visually
• Smelling something bad
• Overwhelmed by noise
• Tasting something unpleasant
?????? Which of their senses might they be struggling with but can't let me know.

Then I can start to try and fix that for them.
It's really about putting ourselves in their shoes.

Because again - imagine getting stroppy because you're too hot and you can't tell anyone - but then you get told off for being stroppy and you then feel more upset and even hotter and more uncomfortable?!
When all you really needed was for someone to see your stroppy behaviour as communicating and to help you take your jumper off and open a window?!

REMEMBER ALL BEHAVIOUR IS COMMUNICATION and there's no such thing as naughty. Let's get our detective hats on and check on sensory needs first!

You've got this.
