A Super Simple Game That Got My Kids Playing On Their Own
(Watch the full reel here.)
The other morning I set up the easiest game ever. Magnetic tiles, a dice, and a couple of counters. That was it.
I lined the tiles up like a path, told the kids to roll the dice into a Clever Bowl (because no one needs dice flying under the fridge), and then move their piece along the tiles. Done.
They got straight into it. No instructions needed, no begging for the TV to be turned on, and we could get stuff done in peace whilst we listened in to them play.
Why it worked
-
Clear, simple rules gave them confidence
-
The dice added excitement
-
They felt in charge without us hovering
The hidden benefits
While they were busy playing, they were:
-
Recognising dice numbers with every roll
-
Counting how many spaces to move
-
Taking turns
-
Starting the day without screens
When it came in handy
-
After school when energy was low
-
First thing in the morning as a calm start
-
When I needed ten minutes to get something done whilst they're occupied
Independent play doesn’t need fancy setups. Sometimes the smallest nudge is enough.
If you’ve got magnetic tiles and a dice, set it up and see what happens.
