A Better Way to Hunt for Easter Treasure (Just Like My Mam Used To Do)

When I was little, my mam would set up the most magical Easter treasure hunts for me. Nothing fancy – just hand-drawn clues tucked around the house, leading me from one place to the next until I found the big prize (usually chocolate, obviously). When I got older, she’d even write rhyming clues to make it trickier – but this year, I’m keeping it simple. My kids aren’t reading yet, so we’re sticking to pictures.

I’ve made a free downloadable version of that same style of hunt – with simple line-drawn icons you can print or trace straight from your phone. You can grab it here.

There are 12 household clues – things most families have, like a sofa, a sink, a fridge, a bed. You can use them all or just a few. You don’t need to overthink it – it’s meant to be simple, fun and easy to repeat.

How it works:
Start by handing your child one clue – for example, the sofa.
Then you hide the next clue (e.g. the toothbrush) on or near the sofa.
Then hide the plant clue near the toothbrush.
And so on – until the final picture, where you hide the treasure.

The treasure can obviously be whatever you want.  Chocolate eggs, a little toy, a note saying “movie night!” – whatever works. It doesn’t need to be big. It just needs to feel fun and full of wonder.

Why it’s more than just a game:
Hunts like this build real skills:
- Language – describing, following directions, using words like under, behind, next to
- Cognition – sequencing, problem-solving, memory, attention
- Independence and confidence – especially when they figure things out on their own

You can do this over and over with different clue combinations. Let your child set it up for you next time. You don’t even need a printer – just trace the icons from your phone if you like.

However you do it, I hope it brings some fun to your Easter weekend.
From our family tradition to yours.
